How to create posts in Canva
We know that with so many features available, it's easy to feel lost, so we'll guide you through the basic tools of the platform. That way, you'll be able to explore Canva with confidence and make the most of your creative potential.
Create a design
- To get started, click on “Create a design”;
- On the homepage, you'll see several options for design types (e.g., Social Media Post, Presentations, Cards, etc.). If you already have an idea for a format, such as “Instagram Post,” click on that option. Otherwise, use the search bar to type in the type of design you want to create;
- Once you've chosen the type of design you want to create, you'll be taken to the edit page, where you'll find a blank space if you've chosen to start a design from scratch.
On the toolbar on the left, you'll find a number of features for enhancing and editing your artwork. Here are some of the top options available:
- Templates: A selection of ready-made designs to make your job easier, including invitations, business cards, banners, and more;
- Elements: A vast library with graphics such as stickers, geometric shapes, videos, photos, audios, and other items to enrich your design;
- Text: Essential tool for adding texts to your project. You can customize the font, color, size, and even apply special effects;
- Branding: Allows you to create a visual identity kit for your brand, including fonts, logo, templates, colors, icons, photos, and other graphic elements, ensuring that everything aligns with your visual identity;
- Upload: Here you can send files directly from your computer or mobile phone to use in your project, such as images, documents, or other resources;
- Drawing: Tool that offers options to draw freely, with pens, erasers, markers and other resources to create unique drawings;
- Projects: In this tab, you will find all the designs you have already created or saved in your account, and you can edit them or use them again;
- Apps: Allows you to integrate Canva with other external apps such as Google Drive, Bitmoji, GIPHY, and others to add more options and make your workflow easier.
Note: In the free version of Canva, you'll have access to many of the aforementioned functionalities, but some options, such as ready-made designs templates and unique toolbar features, are limited. However, by subscribing to the PRO version, you unlock access to an even wider range of tools, unique templates, and advanced features, allowing you to create even more sophisticated designs that are customized to your needs.
- Select a template: Canva offers hundreds of ready-made templates. In the left sidebar, click on “Templates” and choose the type of design that best suits your idea. You can select a template or start with a blank page.
- Customize the design
- Change text: Click the text boxes to edit the message. Change the font, size, and color using the formatting options in the top bar.;
- Add images: Click on the “Photos” or “Uploads” tab (to upload your own images) to add images to the design. Just drag and drop;
- Elements: In the left sidebar, click on “Elements” to add icons, shapes, lines, charts, etc;
- Change colors: On the top or side panel, you can change the background colors, fonts, icons, among other elements;
- Adjust the position, size, and alignment of the elements. Use the alignment tools to make sure everything is centered and well positioned. For more alignment options, click on “File” (in the top tab) > “Settings” > “Show rulers and guides”;
